Violet's mom adds lye to the Buai (beetlenut) she is chewing. The lye, made from cooking hard coral skeletons, is taken by licking a mustard stick and dipping it into a bottle. It is then carefully applied directly to the Buai mash so as not to burn one's mouth. One bites off the mustard and chews the whole concoction into a red wad. Kind of like chewing tobacco, one then spits the juice periodically. Tufi, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.
