The Diving:

Jamaica's reefs were once among the very finest in the Caribbean. According to many of the marine scientists working at the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, a combination of hurricanes, various coral diseases, non-point-source pollution (mostly agricultural run-off), and the dying off of the Spiny Sea Urchin, an important algae grazer, have led to the death of a lot of reef building corals. The reef is now making a comeback, and there are some very nice dive sites available to us.

Don't expect to find any large fish or pelagics, but there are many very colorful smaller fishes and other critters available to use as subjects. There is more than enough reef life to provide ample opportunity to develop your skill in taking a variety of different types of underwater photographs. We will work on many types of underwater photographic techniques including Wide Angle Reef Scenes, Close Focus Wide Angle, Diver Portraits, Close-up, Macro, and more.

Rather than try to dive a different site every dive, as many recreational divers seem to prefer, we will go back to the same handful of sites several times each in order to perfect our photographs, choosing the best sites for our purposes, whatever they be.
