The Details:

We prefer to put two to three students together in a buddy team sharing one camera system. We find this works best for many reasons. Don't worry, if you bring your own camera, you will have the option to share or not to share, depending on your own inclination and that of your fellow students - no hard feelings either way. Buddy teams will need to share expenses for rentals, film, and processing.

Nikonos V rental cameras are available with Subalert vacuum leak-detection systems and a variety of lenses. A 35mm or 28mm lens is included with the camera rental, along with a variety of extension tubes and close-up kits. The 15mm and 20mm lenses are additional and cost as much to rent as do the cameras (if you were to buy them, you'd find they cost considerably more than the cameras.

Please bring your own film. It should be color slide film designed for E-6 processing (like Kodak Ektachrome, Fuji Sensia, Provia, or Velvia). We can only process color slide film on site using the E-6 process. Fujichrome Sensia 100 is the most cost effective film - excellent for student use in photo courses - and is often available from B&H Photo for under $4.00 per roll. Fujichrome Provia 100f is the preferred film among many professional photographers. Feel free to bring a bunch of Sensia and try a roll or two of Provia just to see the difference; there just isn't all that much difference for most purposes. (The differences between the various films available will be explained in the course lectures.) We have a limited supply of Fuji slide film for sale, but prefer you try to bring enough of your own film to get through the course.

Accommodations are simple but nice. Flats have one or two bedrooms and en-suite kitchen and bathroom facilities. There is no air-conditioning, but the bedrooms have fans and there is usually a trade wind blowing. Meals are self-serve Jamaican style and very good! Various juices are provided, and all the water is potable. Alcoholic beverages are not provided, but there are a couple of supermarkets nearby and you can buy whatever you like.

It is a short walk down to the dock, and the boat rides to the dive sites are generally short also. Dive gear is stored in a locker down by the docks, and you can grab a tank any time, day or night, to go for a shore dive. Please bring all your own dive gear, excluding weights. There is a very limited amount of backup gear available for rental in the event you have a gear failure of some kind.
