The Course:

The course is designed to let individual students proceed at their own pace and concentrate on whatever techniques interest them most. There is plenty of time for one-on-one discussion and constructive critiquing. Barry is available pretty much all day and evening to help you in any way, and there is always ample time to get back in the water to try out new ideas.

Lectures and informal discussions will cover a great variety of subjects.

We start with the basics of photography:

Ø Exposure: Light, shutter speed, aperture, film speed

Ø Composition: Lens choices, subject, background, focus, lighting

Next we cover what happens when we take this underwater:

Ø Effects of water on Light: Color, diffusion, refraction, backscatter

Ø Effects of Water on Divers: Resistance to motion, buoyancy and trim

Ø Effects of Water on Cameras: O-rings and maintenance, flooding

Ø Equipment Choices: Point and shoot, submersible, housed SLR, strobes, arms, trays

We also cover a varietyof other related isseues including no-silt diving techniques, swimming backwards, photographing divers, getting published, and much more.

Students can try a variety of equipment and techniques depending on what they bring and what they wish to rent. Various Nikonos V equipment is available for rental including wide angle and macro lenses. It is also possible to try shooting housed SLR. While going far beyond the scope of the PADI basic underwater photography course, PADI Underwater Photographer specialty certification is offered (for the usual PADI fees, of course!).
