The Instructor: Born in New York City in 1955, Barry Lipman first took up photography at the age of eight, using a Voigtlander Vito B 35mm viewfinder camera and a handheld lightmeter. He was certified as an Open Water Diver, camera in hand, on the island of St. John, USVI, in 1990. Since then, his photographs have appeared in many publications including Skin Diver, Solo Caribe, Viejero VIP, Escape, Touragent, Alert Diver, and the second edition of Paul Human's book Reef Creatures. He is staff underwater photographer for Solo Caribe and Viejero VIP. He enjoys diving in a wide variety of environments ranging from warm, clear, tropical waters to the dark green, near-freezing waters of the North Atlantic and the Pacific Northwest.

Currently a PADI Divemaster and a PADI Limited Field Specialty Instructor of Underwater Photography, Barry teaches courses in Underwater Photography for Pan Aqua Diving of Brookfield, Connecticut, and for the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. Through teaching students to take better and more moving photos, he hopes to share and spread awareness of the fragile beauty of the marine environment to a far greater number of people than could be reached by him alone. Besides, he just seems to love teaching this stuff!

Barry spends twelve to fourteen weeks per year traveling, averaging a couple of hundred dives each year, searching for beautiful and interesting images from around the world. When not traveling, he lives in Brookfield, Connecticut, USA, with his wife Ingrid and their two dogs, Spenser and Sheba. In addition to his work as a photographer, Barry serves as Chairman and CEO of the Eastcoast Music Mall of Danbury, Connecticut, USA, where he is also their resident Master Luthier.
